Barca boss Pep Guardiola refuses the mantle of favourites for his team when they meet Bayern Munich tomorrow, but is confident that his players will go into the tie in the best possible condition.

Guardiola was fatalistic about the team’s progress so far this season and about their chances of taking a historic triple when he spoke to reporters at the Nou Camp this lunchtime: “we’re just lucky that we are here, still in the competition. We have to simply take things one game at a time and see where that takes us, which I hope is as far as possible”.

International break

Guardiola took advantage of the recent 10-day international break to thoroughly analyse Wednesday’s opponents and plan the win the fans are hoping for. The break also gave some of his squad time to recover from injuries and the news that he can again count on Hleb and Toure was clearly well received: “it’s great that I can count on the whole squad again - that’s a good omen, we’re ready and prepared for the challenge”.

No to favourites tag

Even though the two teams enjoyed varying fortunes at the weekend, with Barca winning to stay top of La Liga and Bayern taking a hiding at Wolfsburg to slip to fourth, Guardiola doesn’t see his team as automatic favourites: “it’s not worth anything to be pre-match favourites. We are two big clubs and we both have the same chances of getting through to the next round. If either of us are favourites at this point it’s Bayern, who have the second leg at home”.

True to the Barca style

Guardiola also promised his team would not sacrifice their attacking style to pragmatism in the tie: “we’ll play at our best and we’ll play our normal game but keeping in mind who we are up against. We’re looking for a good result to take to Germany and we’ll come out to attack and make chances”.

Finally, Guardiola expressed his confidence in the players. “they know that tomorrow they have to be at their best to get a good result”.

Joan Laporta was upbeat ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League quarter final 1st leg against Bayern, insisting 

that the team were “up for the game”, whilst warning they were facing opponents “with players who can turn a game on their own”.

The President was speaking at the launch of the song Barça, estic boig per tu’, at the start of a busy week of European action.

No favourites on the night

Joan Laporta believes Bayern de Munich are “a very good team, run by very serious people. They have players who can turn a game on their own.” Although he reckons there’s no favourite to get through to the semi-finals, the President accepted: “we have a team capable of getting through the tie and the players are really up for it”. Asked what result he was looking for on Wednesday, Sr Laporta replied: “a win – that will relax us for the second leg”.

“Prudence and humility”

Despite his upbeat attitude, President Laporta insisted on the need for “prudence and humility” and more than anything “maximum respect for our opponents. There is a lot of expectation surrounding the team”, but bearing in mind the experience of previous campaigns, “we would make a mistake if we let our euphoria take over”.

Convinced of a full house

Finally, the President insisted on the importance of a full house on Wednesday, despite the game being played in Catalonia’s Easter Week, commenting: “I’m convinced the ground will be full. The fans have shown this season that they are with the team and I’m sure we’ll fill the ground for this game”.

Alexander Hleb is one of the FC Barcelona players that knows the most about Bayern Munich, and has warned that “we have to concentrate, but we’ll give it everything we have”.

Before playing in England, the Belarusian spent five years wearing the Stuttgart shirt, so he knows all about the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich, a team that “can make Barça suffer”.

Main qualities

“They have great players like Ribéry, Luca Toni and Lahm. Bayern are dangerous from free kicks and corners”. But he also added that “Barça is Barça and we have to make sure they don’t cause us any problems”.

Keys to a good game

The Barça player has no doubts that “Bayern are a good team and we’ll need to concentrate”. To do that, Hleb feels they have to stay faithful to their style of football. “We have to play the game our way, one and two touch football. If we play like that, we’ll make it difficult for them”.

Good result at home

In a two-legged fixture its is always important to avoid letting in goals at home, so Hleb knows the defence will have to do their job well against Bayern: “It is important for the defence to concentrate. It is better to draw 0-0 than to win 2-1”.

Hleb and Lahm

Lahm played alongside Hleb when the two were both on Stuttgart’s books, so the Belarusian knows just what a talented player the Bavarian is, and said today that “he is very good, very skilful, very technical, he has a good shot and reads the game well. He’s a superb player and I think he’s a danger we have to take into account”.
